How Does Procrastination Work.

Hey guys!!! Procrastination is the art of making excuses. Lame excuses. It’s like saying that you can do it and then not doing it at all. Whatever it is, one thing is true that it affects a lot of us. You can say everyone of us. This is really a bad habit so today, let’s learn how does procrastination works in our favorite, Expeknow style.

This blog is inspirated by a TED talk named “Inside the mind of a master procrastinator” by Tim Urben. So, make sure you check that video out on YouTube for better understanding. So, Procrastination is the act or habit of putting off or delaying, especially something required immediate attention. Let me quickly tell you how it works.

Your mind is a steering. Your body is a ship. This world is a river. You are the owner of your ship. This looks pretty fine and there isn’t any problem with all these things. Now, with you, you have got a monkey. A monkey who just knows two things, easy and fun.

Now, suppose you have to make a YouTube channel in 3 months for which you have to write description, scripts, select theme, learn editing, do research, do marketing, etc. You have made all the plans and have got all the respect, gift, subscribers, money in your mind. Now, what you have to do is just to take actions and make it happen. You were just going to take charge of steering when suddenly the monkey came.

The money told you “it’s okay, your plan is awesome but first we have to watch the latest video of your favorite YouTuber then you have to play basketball then you have to go out with your girlfriend, then you have to go for walk with your pet then you have to eat food then you have to take nap then you have to play your favorite game then you have to watch your favorite show then you have to eat food and sleep so you can’t do it today. Let’s do it tomorrow.” And monkey took the charge of steering and your body. This is how you procrastinate.

Now, there is a twist in the story. We also have a monster that is known as the beautiful, hot and sexy “Stress“. You have now procrastinated for 3 weeks so you are now left with only one week. You have only a week which you know but your monkey doesn’t. Now, as monster sees that you aren’t doing anything, it comes and you know what will happen. Monkey got freaked out and left the steering and went into his house. Now, it’s just you who is left with steering but it’s too late now. So, what you do now is all we have been doing in our whole life. Trying to do everything in very little time that will reduce the quality of result but will get the work done.

This is how it works. Now, there is one more thing that plays the role. You had an expiry date which reminded the monster to come. What if there is no expiry date? How would your monster even come to alarm you? That is a problem. There are tons of examples like, working on relationship problems, finding purpose, working on yourself, etc. These are real life problems which you don’t get time to solve. So, make a wise choice when running after pleasure. Remember that normal of everything is fine, going extreme with something ruins your life.

So, in simple words. Understand that your life and time is limited. Sooner or later it is gonna end. Instead of trying to do a lot of task at a time, try to do just a little of it and get the momentum. Try to get a flow and then start raising the bar.
